Matthew Schertz

Matthew W. Schertz, 49, of El Paso, IL passed away at 8:19 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at home after a two and a half year struggle with A.L.S. (Lou Gehrigs Disease).
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Calvert-Johnson & Froelich Memorial Home, El Paso, IL with Pastor Bob Clark officiating. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the memorial home. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery, El Paso. The family has designated memorials be made to A.L.S.A., Danvers Baptist Church elevator fund, or the El Paso Rescue Squad as a preference in place of sending flowers.
Matthew was born April 17, 1968 in Bloomington the son of Glenn R. and Norma Crusius Schertz. He married Kathleen Marshall Cremer on September 18, 2010. He is survived by his wife Kathy, and her sons Collin and Justin Cremer; also surviving are his mother, Norma Schertz of El Paso; one sister Amy (John) Engelmeyer of Springfield; and one brother Johnathan (Suzanne) Schertz of El Paso; several nieces and nephews. Matt was also a mentor to Coleman (Tiffany) Kangley.
His father preceded him in death on November 12, 2009.
Matt graduated from El Paso High School and the University of Illinois, majoring in Ag Science. He worked for UPS for twenty-one years and owned Schertz Cattle Company. He was a Consultant for Ambit Energy. He was a member of the Danvers Baptist Church. Matt enjoyed fishing, watching the Cubs and the Blackhawks. In 2015 he and Kathy went to Washington, DC to advocate for A.L.S. and in 2016 he participated with his team in the Peoria and Rockford A.L.S. walks.
