John Thomas Gum, 78, of Bloomington, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at 10:19 pm at Advocate BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal. John’s service will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at 11:00 am at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington. Following the service burial will take place at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements. John was born on March 23, 1939 in Sorento, Illinois, the son of Elvin and Nellie Bernice (West) Gum. He married Joan House on February 8, 1959 in Auburn, Illinois.
John is survived by his wife Joan of Bloomington, their children; Becky (Alan) Look of Bloomington and Deborah Gum of Peoria. Also surviving is one grandson; John Look of Chicago, a sister; Mary Ann Birutas of Terre Haute, In and a brother; Roger Gum of Troy, Il. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother; Earl Gum. John was a graduate of Eastern Illinois University and worked for State Farm Insurance Company as a System Analyst for 32 years. He enjoyed playing golf, working in the yard, playing and repairing pinball machines and taking his dog Tuffy on scooter rides.
