John R. “Bob” Deffenbaugh, 89, of Pontiac, IL passed away at 4:25 pm on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Good Samaritan Home in Pontiac.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at St. Mary’s Church, Pontiac with Father Adam Cesarek officiating. According to Bob’s wishes there will be no visitation. A Rosary will be recited at 1:30 pm on Thursday prior to mass at the church. Burial will follow services at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Pontiac, where military rites will be accorded. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pontiac. Calvert & Martin Funeral Home in Pontiac is handling arrangements for the family.
Bob was born June 6, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois a son of Michael and Lois (Tarrant) Deffenbaugh. He married H. Darlene Falk on December 26, 1951 in Odell, IL. She passed away on August 29, 2007.
He is survived by his children: Debra (Bud) Ramseyer of Pontiac and Patricia (Tom) Pieper of Germantown Hills, IL; five grandchildren: Melissa Severson, Eric Pieper, Jason Pieper, Amanda Ramseyer and Rob Ramseyer; one great granddaughter: Catherine Severson; two great grandsons: Wyatt and Emmett Ramseyer; two sisters: Mary Joanne LeDoux and Ellen Louro; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Michael Deffenbaugh.
Bob was a graduate of Odell High School and attended the University of Illinois for a short time. He joined the United States Air Force, where he served his country for 20 years during WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Pontiac VFW and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pontiac.
Upon retiring from the military, Bob opened up the Donut King. He then was the manager for a number of years at the Palamar Restaurant and Motel. He also owned and operated the restaurant- The Corner and another restaurant in Odell. Finally, he continued to stay busy delivering papers and being the bank courier.
Bob was a tough, organized, military-minded man who was stubborn and in charge. He also loved to talk and listen and always wanting to play with kids and have fun.
He was a loving dad, grandpa, great grandpa, brother, uncle and friend who will be greatly missed.

Bob was a good neighbor, always kind and quick with a smile. It was my pleasure to have known you.
An avid Cubs fan, I can see him sitting in the garage doorway listening to his favorite team. When he wasn’t listening to the Cubs he was cutting his grass. Meticulous on how his lawn looked, his son-in-law would come almost every weekend to tend to landscape items for Bob. It was easy to see how much Bob was loved by his family because they were always involved in Bob life. Now with his lovely wife, Darlene, Resting In Peace in Heaven.
